The Music Therapy Begins

Ira explored the musical instruments enthusiastically and arranged them all around her. The instruments’ singular brief performance then followed. Ira created sounds with each instrument. She gave me clear signals that I should not touch the instruments. I listened and watched. She discovered the hand puppets that from then on served her as the instrument to express her inner psychological problems. At the beginning, Ira played on her own, but she knew exactly how to manipulate my inner presence and attention for her playing. During the first sessions many of the subjects that were to accompany us for a long time appeared in extremely compact and distinctive sequences. It was within this chaotic and strenuous setting that the whole concept for our therapeutic work process was designed.

Seen from her point of view, the reason for this compactness and the exclusion of the instruments, which apparently did not directly and realistically enough present what she wanted to express immediately, could well have been the subjectively felt immediate threat of physical and psychological vitality. Furthermore, she might have realized that I could become very competent and superior when playing the instruments whereas her desire was the exact opposite: soon I was supposed to be a dependable partner in terms of listening when she was playing with the puppets. (Before Ira, at the age of twenty months, was brought to the hospital due to bloody diarrhea, she had been malnourished by her grandmother and her mother. This malnourishment continued after the surgery.) Music is often experienced as a feeding, oral gesture. Ira wanted me to be silent, to provide a holding environment and resonate empathically, according to the needs of a newborn child. In her psychological development, Ira restarted at the very beginning and made sure that everything was done exactly the way she needed it/would have needed it. She also took control of everything regarding food and communication. She played being bottle-fed and while she sat on my lap, she also spoke in the role of her ideal mother, absorbing the entire goodness coming from the close human contact. In February and March, two more intestinal surgeries followed.
