Chapter Twenty-Three

“Why are you bent slightly to the right?” Dawn asked as she lay snuggled against Marc later that evening, seeming as sated and relaxed as he felt.

“I guess it’s because I’m right-handed,” he explained.

“And?” She lifted her head and gazed down at him.

“I was a horny teenager, but I didn’t get some until I was almost twenty-two.”

“Some?” Dawn looked puzzled for a moment and then laughed as the penny dropped. “Almost twenty-two? And here I was thinking that I was positively ancient to be a virgin at the ripe old age of twenty-three.”

“My stutter made me too shy to hit on women before that.”

“And afterwards?”

Marc couldn’t help but smile as he remembered his younger self.

“Once I got started, I kept going like a rabbit.”

“I bet you did.” Dawn pulled the cover up over her nakedness as if suddenly chilled and he realized that he’d said entirely the wrong thing.

“That’s all in the past, sweetheart.” Marc turned her head and held her gaze as he said the words.

He still cringed when he recalled his ‘wild days’. He had been like a kid in a candy store. The women had been more than willing and flush from the success of his software company, he had wined and dined them one after the other.

But even then, he’d been careful to choose sophisticated women who were happy to enjoy his company and what he had to offer in exchange for brief interludes. None of them had ever convinced him that they would be with him if he hadn’t been quite as financially endowed.

And though he’d made love to them, he’d never spent the night with any of them, too worried about waking up and stuttering in their presence in an unguarded moment.

Even when one of them had told him that he’d been featured in a woman’s magazine and been dubbed ‘Mr. One Night of Pleasure’, it hadn’t stopped others from queuing up for the experience themselves.

By then he’d already started to become bored with bedding women whose names he hardly remembered.

“Why is it in the past?” she asked, her voice ripe with skepticism.

“About four months ago, I realized that I want more from a woman than meaningless sex.”

The realization had come three nights after his twenty-seventh birthday, the same night he’d terminated his membership of Naires & Graces, an elite Pall Mall men’s club.

Marc had found the club exciting when he’d first joined the other millionaire and billionaire playboy members. Some of the most stunning women in the UK, the ‘Graces’ as they had been called, had been available purely for the members’ pleasure.

It had been fun for a while, but having worked hard for everything he’d achieved in his life, Marc had grown tired of the ‘easy candy’.

The final straw had come on that evening when the auburn-haired young woman had offered her virginity to the highest bidder.

Watching other member swoop in like vultures to a kill had sickened Marc; he’d decided there and then that they weren’t the kind of company he wanted to keep.
