Messerschmitt Bf 108 ‘Taifun’

Manufactured by Bayerische Flugzeugwerke A.G., the Bf 108 was a development of Messerschmitt’s earlier two-seat M 37. Willi Messerschmitt struggled through the 1920s and early 1930s to keep his company in business, following a period of bad luck and serious financial difficulties. The Bf 108, initially a sports design powered by a Hirth HM 8U engine, had been built to take part in the 1934 ‘Challenge de Tourisme Internationale’. While the aircraft did not win the event, its performance certainly restored confidence in Messerschmitt as a leading manufacturer.

The Bf 108 gained considerable notoriety in the hands of Elly Beinhorn, a leading female aviator of the period. While flying a Bf 108A, called ‘Taifun’ (Typhoon) in 1935, Beinhorn famously flew from Gleiwitz in Silesia to Scutari on the Bosporus and back, a round trip of 3,470 km, in 13.5 hours. In honour of Beinhorn’s achievement, Messerschmitt determined that all future 108s should be given the name ‘Taifun’. Feats such as Beinhorn’s only served to strengthen Messerschmitt’s already growing reputation.
