“Bill, have you got everything?” Colonel Cory asked his executive officer as he approached the sixty vehicles of his battalion. They were all lined up in the unit motor pool area. Each had gone through a detailed inspection for the trip. Each had the battalion crest painted in the window so the vehicles could be quickly identified when it came time to retrieve them in Saudi Arabia, or wherever they were going to be delivered. Bill was the convoy commander and had two soldiers in the cab of each vehicle.

“Yes, sir, we’re about ready to roll. Our SP time is 0900, and I figure it’ll take twenty minutes for us to get on the interstate. From there, it’s down I-24 to I-75 in Chattanooga and on to Fort Gillium outside Atlanta for the night stop. We should arrive in Jacksonville around 1700 tomorrow night. I understand they have three buses laid on to bring us home as soon as we turn the vehicles over to the port people,” Bill said confidently as all was ready. “I’ll be in the lead vehicle and Mr. Wooley will bring up the rear with the maintenance vehicle and wrecker.”

“Have you got enough tow bars for the HUMMVs?” Colonel Cory asked.

“Every fourth vehicle has one, and we have one for every other deuce-and-a-half,” Bill said. Why is the old man playing twenty questions? Bill was thinking. “Sir, you worried about something?”

“Nah, I’m just concerned that we haven’t had enough time like everyone else to get ready. We pushed hard to get back from West Point. We’ve had, what, four days to get the vehicles ready for this trip to Jacksonville, and we still have a lot to do here to get the guys ready as well. Hell, we got over one hundred soldiers in over the summer that have never trained with their respective units. We need to get them in some live-fire exercises. We need to get some of these new lieutenants in some live-fire exercises too,” Cory explained.

“Sir, you won’t be able to do that—you have no vehicles to get them to the ranges. Can’t carry weapons and ammo in POVs,” Bill pointed out.

“Oh, yeah? Watch me. We’re commandeering POVs, and I’ll haul the weapons and ammo to the ranges in them if I have to. I will find a way. Hey, you best get going and have a safe trip,” Cory said as he extended his hand to Bill.
