Chapter Fourteen

“Must be nice,” Tito said as he came trotting atop a horse he’d been working. He tied her to a post, then sat down next to Toma. He removed his hat, tossed it onto the ground, and drank the entire contents of his water bottle in one gulp.

“I’ve run like six horses already and mucked the stables. I can take a break,” Toma said.

“Oh, my God. What is that?”

“You smell like sweat. Get away.”

“So do you. What is that?”

“Nothing.” Toma felt like a little kid in her attempt to hide her new phone. It was no use.

“Need help?”

“No. Yeah.” She presented her new iPhone. “I’m not used to Apple products.”

“Look at you, Little Miss High Tech.” Tito wiggled his eyebrows.

“Shuddup and show me how to send a damn text message.” Toma had caved and gotten a new phone when she and Eva started texting. It took Toma way too long to text, and that wasn’t any way to maintain a friendship.

“Demanding much?”

“Pretty please?” She batted her eyes.

“Here is where you go to start typing a message.” Tito pointed at the little green box. “See, it says messages, right here. Look. Messages.” He drew out each syllable.

“Shuddup.” She laughed.

“You shuddup and pay attention. Watch me type.” Tito started typing words.

“Oh wow, that looks much easier than cycling through one key for the letters.”

“That’s what I’ve been trying to tell you.” He mock-slapped his forehead.

“What did you send?” Toma attempted to retrieve her phone, which he held just out of reach. “I texted Dad and said you were making tabouli tonight.”

“Tabouli? That takes forever.”

“I know.” He smirked. “Now you try. Send me something.” He handed the phone to her.

“What’s your number?”

“You don’t have it?”

“I’m still transferring my contacts.”

“How many do you got in there?”

“Like a hundred.” Toma eyed her old phone, which sat next to her gloves.

“Sucks to be you.” He took her phone and input his info. “There.”

“My hot brother?” She laughed at how he programed in his number. “You’re crazy.”

“Text me something.”

yo.

She looked at her brother’s phone. “Did you get it?”

“You have to send it.” He pressed the send key for her. His phone chimed. Then hers did.

“Oh! I got a message.”

“That was me, silly.”

“Wow, you’re fast.”

“Because it’s that fast. Aren’t you going to read it?”

“So so suck your toe all the way to Mexico, while you’re there, brush your hair, don’t forget your underwear.”

“Remember Mom used to sing that to us?”

“I loved that.”

“Why the sudden interest in joining the twenty-first century?” Tito asked.

“Nunya.”

“Uh-huh,” he said. “Tell Miss Rodeo Idaho hola for me.” He left her with a little wave.

Toma rolled her eyes and watched him leave the barn with his horse before she programmed Eva’s number into her phone and started a text message.

good luck tonight. not that you need it.

Toma sent the text to Eva before she had a chance to chicken out. She shoved the phone into her back pocket and immediately pulled it out when a chime sounded.

Thanks! Eva texted.

are you nervous? or is the fact that i’m asking you if you’re nervous making you nervous?

LOL.
