The poem is structured throughout by an underlying dualism of thought which moves between the timeless and the temporal. The speaker (the poet, it seems) holds the object of his thought in a dynamic tension between the poles of dualistic vision. He moves between the ideal and the real, the heavenly and the earthly, the timeless and the temporal. It is the last of these dichotomies which is essential: it is time which seems to threaten the child's perfection and bring upon him the threat of changes. Here is a tabulation of the two poles as presented in the poem:
unutterable thought Pain/grief
Faery Voyager injuries of tomorrow
air earthly
Vision the soiling earth
Lamb's heart full-grown flocks
