Gratitude Equals Results
Do I sound a bit preachy about this subject? Probably because I am. I’ve experienced the power of gratitude in my life firsthand, and it blows my mind that people don’t practice it. There is so much more to this practice than feeling good or “attracting happiness.” I’m a down-to-earth person. Gratitude journaling brings results. All kinds of them. It brings them quickly, in measurable, statistically significant form.
At the beginning of this Chapter I quoted Shawn Achor about gratitude rewiring the human brain into positivity. This is his quote about the effects of positivity on your life:
When the brain is positive, every possible outcome we know how to test for raises dramatically.
– Shawn Achor
Scientists tested for everything they could think of measuring. Health, relationships, sales, grades at school, bank account balance, fitness performance, chances of promotion at work— everything!
There was no single exception. I guess there never will be one. It’s a law of nature. When your brain is positive, you get better results in everything.
Self-talk is only one of many facets of your life that will improve if you keep a gratitude journal. Some other aspects of your life directly related to self-talk will improve as well, like positive self-awareness, self-control, or mindfulness.
And your whole life will get better! Wouldn’t it be great to lose 10% of your excess weight, have 15% more friends, 5% more money in your bank account, and 10% fewer worries with a snap of your fingers? Gratitude journal is not quite so magical; it takes about thirty days to rewire your brain into positivity and only then the effect kicks in. But unlike a snap of your fingers, this practice will give you all of these results and more.
I heard Shawn Achor on a podcast when I had been keeping a gratitude journal for three years. I enjoyed doing it, but I didn’t pay much attention to it. It was just a fun thing to do for me. Then I listened to this podcast episode and realized that a huge part of my success in the previous three years could be credited to the positivity of my brain, which was maintained thanks to my gratitude journals.
In three years, I turned from a miserable employee with no real purpose in life into a passionate author following a well-defined personal mission. Everything in my life got better. From my spiritual life to my possessions, my life was better in every aspect. I prayed more, got sick significantly fewer times, increased my savings ratio, beat dozens of personal fitness records, earned more, got more friends, and so on. I could continue this list for the next ten thousand words.
But what if I could credit only 15% of all those results to my gratitude journals? This still qualifies as “dramatic.” It more than justifies this tiny activity, in my eyes.
By the way, Achor is a scientist, and he talks about tangible, measurable metrics. My experience is that “every outcome” means truly everything , including things unmeasurable to science.
