Once you’ve ticked all of these items, you can take your daughter out and be reasonably confident that she will remain dry. There are bound to be some accidents over the next few weeks, so pack spare underpants and tights, wipes, and a plastic bag to put soiled clothes into. We also suggest protecting the stroller with a travel changing mat for the first week or so—mainly to minimize your stress and keep things nice and relaxed.

Your First Trips Out

Your first outing could be to the supermarket, a local café, or a (tolerant) friend’s house. Don’t go too far from home in the first week—a day trip in the car is obviously more likely to result in accidents.

Tell your daughter where the bathroom is when you arrive and ask if she needs to go. Chances are that she won’t even go to the bathroom on her first few trips out, especially if you keep them short. This stage is about confidence building, so when you get home, do tell your daughter how clever she is to have gone out without her diaper.

It’s worth reminding little girls to go to the bathroom whenever you happen to be near one. This will reduce the number of tedious public restroom searches. Get into the habit of asking if your daughter needs to pee before you leave home and whenever you arrive somewhere with a bathroom. She may be wary of using an unknown toilet, so tell her you need to go and suggest she come along, too. It’s worth finding out where the restroom is in your local supermarket, library, or anywhere else you may visit in the early weeks because when your daughter needs to pee, you won’t have long to get her there.
