If you lay this foundation well in the early years, it will be much easier to build on it as the years go by. If, for whatever reason, the opportunity to build a secure connection was missed in the early years, simply start where you are and do the best you can. Store up a lot of grace—for yourself and for your child—to tap into in times of turbulence and trial. When breaks happen, reconnect as soon as possible. When trust is broken, seek to mend it. It will always be your responsibility as the adult to initiate the reconnection and repair. It is always the obligation of the more mature mind to reach out first and lead the way.
