Chapter Eleven

“Hello, handsome,” I said when I answered the door and found Alec standing on my doorstep.

He grinned. “Hello, beautiful,” he said and kissed me. “How are you this evening?”

I stepped back to let him into the house. “I’ve been doing wonderfully well,” I said. “I made plum butter today and I’m going to sell small jars of it at Henry’s Home Cooking Restaurant.”

“Plum butter? I don’t think I’ve ever had plum butter,” he said and followed me into the kitchen. “I may need to try it out to make sure it passes muster.”

“Oh, it will pass muster,” I said. “But you know what I’m going to do first?”

He looked at me, one eyebrow raised. “No, tell me.”

“I’m going to take you out to dinner. I know you’ve been working hard all day and you need a lovely dinner to top off your day.”

“That does sound good, but I’m hardly dressed to go out,” he said, holding up both hands so I could get a good look at him. He was wearing a faded T-shirt and jeans.

“You are dressed perfectly for dinner. Let me grab my purse and we will be on our way.”

“Where are we going?” he asked, following me into the living room. “And when am I going to get to taste that plum butter?”

“We’ll have some plum butter when we get back home. I made some vanilla scones and the plum butter is wonderful on them.” I grabbed my purse and put it over my shoulder. “Okay, let’s go.”

“Where are we going?” he asked again, following me out the door.

I locked the door and turned to him. “Le Chemise.”

“Wait a minute; I am completely underdressed for that place. And we were just there.”

“Who cares? They knew they were opening up a business in a small town, and it’s not like small-town folk dress up all the time. And you know you love the food there, so don’t complain.”

“Whatever you say.” He chuckled, and we got into his black SUV.

When he had pulled out of my driveway, I turned to him. “So tell me what’s going on with the case? I want all the details.”

He chuckled again. “You’re nothing if not reliable. I know exactly what I’m going to get with you.” He looked over at me.

“That should absolutely delight you. No surprises here. Now what’s going on?”

“We got the medical reports back, and she was hit in the back of the head with a blunt object.”

“So, not an accident?”

He shook his head. “Not an accident. The wound was too large, and the angle wasn’t right for a fall.”

“Any idea why she was at the beach?”

He shook his head again. “No, her husband last saw her at work. He left early because he’d been there since early that morning and she never came home.”

“Wait a minute, did he file a missing person’s report?”

He shook his head. “No, she wasn’t missing for twenty-four hours. You and Lucy found her on the beach long before twenty-four hours would have been up.
