The storm that I'd heard about broke a few hours later, thunder shaking the windows of my new room that I'd already tried to unlock.
I sat on the bed, doors open beside me that led into a bathroom and closet, respectively.
What could I do?
Nyko had left me with too many questions, and now I found myself biting my lip and wishing I had some kind of activity to entertain myself with.
The bedroom didn't even have a television. For rich serial killers, they sure were inhospitable to their guests.
The thought made me snort, and I drew my legs up under my chest. Guest. What a joke. I wasn't a guest here.
I was a prisoner.
The handcuff on my wrist was proof of that, wasn't it?
The door to my room opened, making me jump, and when two furry shapes barreled into the room, I was sure that I was going to die. Were these attack dogs that Nyko had let in to eat me?
Seemed like something he'd do.
Hands halfway up to my face, I paused.
I knew those faces.
"Frank?" I whispered as the first dog nosed at my leg from beside the bed. The female, Angie, hopped up onto the blankets and licked my face affectionately.
Holy shit.
"What-how did you-"
"Az, I told you not to let them run in here!" Lysander's voice was loud enough to make me wince, and I paused with my fingers buried in Frank's scruff to look up as the blonde entered my room with two duffel bags over his arms and another almost dragging the floor at his side.
"Why do you have them? Did you steal them?" I demanded, suspicion in my voice.
Frank wandered over to Lysander and nosed his pocket, her tail wagging. If he had stolen them, they weren't exactly upset about it.
"How are you feeling?" Lysander let the bags fall and pushed them against the wall. I briefly looked at them, but immediately my gaze was back on Lysander as thunder sounded once more.
"Did you?" I snapped, the harshness of my voice not holding up well while the German Shepherd that bathed my hand with her tongue.
Lysander rolled his eyes. "We adopted them from your shelter on our way out, darling," he told me slowly, explaining it as if I were a child.
I scowled at him to hide my fear.
"I take it you're feeling okay? Uncle gave you a pain shot when he was here, and he said it should keep the worst of it away for a day or so."
Uncle?
No. That was too much. I couldn't focus on another question when I had too many to worry about already.
"Yeah, I'm...I'm fine," I said, absently scratching Frank's ears.
"Great. Catch." He'd unzipped one of the bags and produced something from it about the length of my forearm. I caught it as the dusky brown thing sailed across the room, and when I did, I stared down at the stuffed animal in my lap, nonplussed.
It was my rabbit.
"You...broke into my apartment?" I asked through numb lips, unsure of why I was so shocked when they'd proven that this was part of their modus operandi back in Scheffield.
