In the blink of an eye, the four of them were in what looked like an emergency room with floating beds.

“Computer, begin the nano-enhanced sobriety protocol, please,” Dr. Martinez said. She had some burns on her shirt, neck, and chest from Itch’s acid. A blue light came down from the ceiling of the med-bay, and Dee felt her liquor high fall off, bringing on a punishing headache all at once.

Dr. Martinez’s white lab coat floated toward her, and she put it on. The stethoscope appeared, and she began typing feverishly on her 3D pad.

“We’re in a shitload of trouble. Supreme Commander Nala is on board, in case you missed that half-planet-sized universal-class destroyer cruising alongside us. I don’t think you realize what will happen now that you’ve used your abilities against other Milky Way soldiers in a stupid bar brawl,” Dr. Martinez screamed into their throbbing ears.

“Nathan, maybe you didn’t learn from your castigation and little six-month stint in the brig. Charles, you may be rewrapped, but in Martian years you are older than most of us. I expected better. As for you, Dee, you’d better catch up quick if you ever want me over for Christmas again!

“SC Nala was on staff at the Musk Postgraduate Academy,” she continued. “Do you know what course she taught? What her specialty skill set is? Torture, interrogation, and disposition of spies, defectors, and deviant military personnel. She’s considered a ‘gifted pioneer’ in corporal punishment and disciplinary tactics for dealing with insubordinate officers. Her teacher was War Secretary Richard T. Beefus, a ‘castigation specialist’!” Dr. Martinez thundered.

Smoke rose from her uniform and chest as the remnants of Itch’s acid continued to burn her skin, and she started to cough.

“Computer, engage dermal regeneration on me,” she said. The blue light fixed her skin in an instant, and she stood shaking her head in anger while smoke continued to waft from the tatters of her uniform beneath the lab coat.

“Suzy, I’m sorry. I think Bob made those drinks a little strong again, and—” Itch began.

“Shut up, Nathan Egbert Rivera! We will discuss this incident in private later!” Dr. Martinez snapped.

“Egbert?” Dee and Charlie asked in unison.

“Major, isn’t your middle name ‘Beaver’?” Itch asked Charlie.

The scene had the feel of the eye of a storm. Chaos had come before, and Dee didn’t know what would come after, but all at once, she was exhausted, mentally and physically.

“This was fun, but I’m going to bed. I have to face Commander Godzilla tomorrow. Good night, folks,” Dee said, rising from the floating cot she’d briefly rested on.

“I think I’ll call it a night too,” Charlie said.

They hurried out before Dr. Martinez could continue her diatribe, leaving Itch to suffer alone. A second later, Dee turned back, intent on asking the doctor a question about her room with Crudup. But Itch and Dr. Martinez were making out on a floating bed, and Dee covered her face, embarrassed by her unexpected intrusion.

Shaking her head, she wandered down the hall and asked the computer to direct her.
