I couldn’t win the spelling bee, though Mrs. C expected me to. That’s what I remember. They wrote about growing up in England and Wales, but their stories of feeling lost inside of their own educational upward mobility, their painful separations from the comforts and values of their pasts and families, felt like my story. Actually, it was my story.
