“Hello the wagon!” a man bellowed from somewhere in the dark.
With little to no light, he was hard to make out, but his frame was silhouetted in the moonlight on a horse. Ryder recognized him, yet he didn’t. He was familiar but yet there was no way he could know who he was.
Ryder tensed and gave Tillie a nervous glance before standing up. “Just wait here for me,” he said under his breath. Walking toward the man, he stayed on high alert. He wasn’t sure what to expect. “Good evening. I’m Ryder McCullen and this is my wife, Tillie.”
The man laughed and climbed down, lowering a rifle Ryder hadn’t seen in his hands. “No need to be so formal, boy. Get over here and say hello. Let me have a look at ya.”
As Ryder approached the man, it was easy to see the resemblance. He was the perfect mixture of Sam and Ryder, holding a balance of McCullen squarely on his face. Ryder held his hand out, ready to greet his great, great, great something grandfather.
“Well hang my spurs, you look so much like my father. There’s no denying the McCullen blood in you!” He chuckled again. “Poutin said my nephew was in town.”
Dang. It was as if Ryder stuck himself in the shoot and wasn’t sure how to get out.
The man slapped him on the back. “It’s so good to have you here. I’ll admit I was a bit surprised. Especially hearing that you are a newly married man and all, I figured you’d be a bit busy.”
Tillie sucked in a sharp breath from behind the wagon and Ryder knew she was probably biting her tongue off to keep from speaking. He chuckled. “Yes, sir. The married life sure has kept me busy, but so far it’s been worth every moment. It still feels like it just happened today.” At least he didn’t lie about the last part. “Excuse my ignorance, but how should I address you, sir?”
It was hard to see, but Ryder caught a glimpse of a smile from the man. “That’s some high-falutin talkin’. The city teach that to you?” He chuckled warmly again. “Uncle or Carter will do just fine. Some have even called me grandfather, although I’ve not had any kids of my own yet.” He gave a knowing grin to Ryder, almost letting him know he knew something Ryder didn’t. “Poutin said you arrived early today, and when you didn’t show for supper I figured I should head out and look for ya. Well come on, let’s get you two kids home. We can talk around the table over some hot coffee. I told Cookie to keep some on the fire.”
Ryder glanced over his shoulder at Tillie, who was already venturing closer to where he stood.
“Is that your bride? And, just what in the blazes is she wearing? Are those britches?” Carter stepped forward and reached Tillie just as she brushed the side of Ryder, her knuckles grazing his. “My, you are a very pretty filly.
