The gold rush of the mid-1800s was a wild frenzy as thousands of prospectors flooded remote areas. Boom-towns sprang up, and with them came opportunities. Many women opened supply shops. Others worked as cooks, barmaids, and dancers. Some gritty women even tried their hand at mining.

Mining was a grueling business, and it took endurance and patience to make a living at it. Louise Clappe was a successful miner in the Sierra Nevada Mountains of California. She was known in the West as Dame Shirley. She wrote to her sister back in New England that she could never return to the East. “I like the wild and barbarous life,” Dame Shirley said.3
