Robert Noyce became known as the “Mayor of Silicon Valley” for his untiring work to improve the semiconductor industry and its markets.

Computers at the time used core memories. Noyce and Moore were convinced that semiconductors, smaller and cheaper, could replace the core devices.11 The company took off; however, his marriage ended. He and Betty divorced in 1974. The next year he married Ann Bowers, an Intel employee.

Noyce led the company until 1979, when he became vice chairman. He used his spare time to speak out for the semiconductor industry. His enthusiasm and energy led some to call him the Mayor of Silicon Valley.

He moved to Austin, Texas, to head Sematech. This group of semiconductor manufacturers tries to strengthen the American market and improve microchip companies. He died on June 3, 1990, after a heart attack.

They were both inducted into the National Inventors’ Hall of Fame. In 2000, Kilby was awarded the Nobel Prize in physics “for his part in inventing the integrated circuit.”12 Like Thomas Edison, the Wright brothers, and Alexander Graham Bell, Kilby and Noyce invented an irreplaceable tool of modern life. Chips are in personal computers, cars, video games, store scanners, cellular phones, TVs, clocks, and much more. Because of Kilby and Noyce, electronics—and the world—changed forever.
