Like the old phoenix, which, the more it got

Burnt up (recycling its own stuff, no doubt,

For it did not burn down), the more it grew—

Although no fire consumes us, we burn with what

Only the fire of doing can put out

As part of me turns into part of you.

Of hope, and points toward the arresting red,

Which strangely—given what we’ve made it mean—

Rhymes with Go ahead!

A glint of hopeful color in the pigments

Of our red signals is itself a sign:

The frightful hard g in the word malignant’s

Silent in benign.
