Chapter 13

After running with Emma when I got home, I walked back to the house. Esmeralda sat on her porch. I crossed the road and sat on the swing. “How are you doing?”

“I’m fine. Look, I’m not crazy. I didn’t kill Nan, no matter what Steve thinks. I just felt like Greg was going to have enough on his plate without having to stand up for the local witch.” She pushed her mop of curly hair from her face and twisted it into one lock that she tied into a low knot on the back of her head. The change made her look younger. More vulnerable. “Rory, Deek’s mom, is coming over tonight and we’re drinking and talking until we pass out on the floor. You’re welcome to join us.”

“As fun as that sounds, I have a feeling Greg might be home tonight. He’s been gone so much lately that I’d like us to spend some time together if possible. But if he calls and tells me to eat on my own, I’ll come over.” I scratched my dog behind her ears. Emma leaned her head on my lap, her gaze finding my own. She was easy to please. “I can’t believe Steve is still so upset. You’d think he’d realize you didn’t kill Nan.”

“He needs someone to blame besides himself. He told me that he was trying to stop her from coming here. That he’d had a bad feeling lately. He must have thought she was going a bit mad without their son.” She leaned her arms on her thighs. “I can’t say I blame her.”

“What do you know about her business? Did she have people threatening her about the product?” Esmeralda probably knew more about these people than anyone else. I might as well use my source.

“She said there was a fool born every minute and she had the business to prove it.” Esmeralda leaned her head back. “I knew she was cheating people. Selling hope. It never turns out well when all you want is the money.”

I didn’t want to point out that she was also in the hope business, but she probably had a better heart and wanted people to heal, not hurt. “You’re saying she knew her training wasn’t teaching people a skill?”

“She said day trading was nothing but gambling. She was making money on the system she sold, not as a trader. Steve built her website and helped her set up the training. He’s good with computers.” Esmeralda stroked Emma’s head as she spoke.

“Did he say where his office was?” My dog liked calming people. And she was good at it.

“He worked out of his house. I guess they were going to build an office, but once they lost Eric, he lost interest.”

And now the property made sense. I guessed there wasn’t a wild story about it. I’d wasted most of my day going to look at an old house. I glanced at my watch. I still had time to get home and take a shower before getting dinner started.
