A hand made a slow pass in front of her eyes, then, curving thumb to middle finger, it made a quick snap. Mia startled and looked up.

“What planet are you on?” her friend, Tabitha, asked.

Offering a weak smile, Mia wadded her hands in her lap. “I don’t know what you mean. I’m here.”

Tabitha frowned. “No, you aren’t. I’ve spoken to you three times now.” She raised a matching number of fingers. “I know you said you wanted to come, but ...”

She didn’t really want to come. She’d actually hoped it would preoccupy her mind, so she’d quit staring at the phone waiting for Josh to call. Why hadn’t he called? He’d said he would.

“Have you ever been kissed?” she asked.

Tabitha’s eyes widened. “As in, by a boy?”

“No, a Yeti. Yes, a boy.”

Brushing blonde hair over her shoulder, Tabitha leaned back in the fast food booth. “Once. Have you?”

“Yes, and I’m not sure what it meant.” A curious expression rose on Tabitha’s face then, and Mia inhaled. “It was unexpected and now ...”

“This was recent?”

Three days. Why hadn’t he called? There was really only one reason ... that he regretted it, because if he’d liked it, he would have contacted her by now.

“Who?”

Mia weighed whether or not to say, then sighed. At this point, what did it matter? He hadn’t called, which meant he wasn’t that interested. “Joshua Dixon.”

“Really?” Sitting straighter, Tabitha eyed her, one hand flexing on the table top. “I didn’t know you two were friends.”

“We weren’t, but then we were. We went a few places together. He came over twice. He said he’d call, but hasn’t.”

“Was this after the kiss?”

Mia waved one hand, dismissive. “I’m thinking on it too hard. It was late. We were both tired. Maybe he’s been busy.”

“You really like him,” Tabitha said, leaning in. “If you like him that much, call and ask him why.”

Mia slouched. “I can’t do that. It makes me look desperate, and we agreed we were only friends.”

“You agreed? When?” Lifting her drink, Tabitha took a sip.

After her brother embarrassed them both. No way was she telling that to anyone. She’d never live it down and neither would he.

“Hey, let’s forget it,” Mia said. “It was nothing. I want to go to that new accessories shop.” Sliding out of the booth, she grabbed her tray and toted it to the trash.

“I’m in. Nothing fixes the heart better than a little retail therapy.”

Wandering into the mall corridor, they headed toward the shop she’d mentioned, losing themselves inside amongst racks of cheap costume jewelry, hair bows, and makeup displays. For a time, her thoughts of Josh faded. Then she spotted a case filled with necklace charms. Her gaze drawn to the letter “J”, she tapped one finger on the glass.

Silly. Why would she buy that? Curling her hand into a fist, she turned her back and walked away. Tabitha dangled a string of fake beads in her path, and she halted.

“These will go great with my new dress.”

Mia forced herself to smile. No need to be a spoil sport.
