Ya Muhyi, Ya Mumit, Ya Hayy
(yaa MUḤ-yee, yaa mu-MEET, yaa ḤAIYY)
There is a whole cluster of Names that function in a finite way. Al-Muhyi and al-Mumit are excellent examples. That which brings life, when something begins, is al-Muhyi. And that which ends life, when something ends, is al-Mumit. Al-Muhyi is an expression of the arc of ascent. As life arrives, al-Muhyi is its only cause. Al-Mumit expresses the arc of descent. When death comes, al-Mumit is the only cause. These Names describe the reality that is behind the everyday experience of living and dying as we know it in this finite realm.
Al-Hayy, on the other hand, expresses the undying, ever-living nature of Allah. This transcendental Name is not affected by birth and death. Its ever-living nature includes both al-Muhyi and al-Mumit. Both death and life, as finite phenomena, begin and end continuously in al-Hayy, the ever-living. Al-Hayy, as a divine Name, can be said to be in the eternal and infinite category.
Following this example, it is not difficult to see the infinite circle of the arc of ascent and descent. It is of particular importance to see how contemplation of this divine circle, of necessity, intuitively leads to recognition of the undying, eternal state. We saw how al-Hayy includes both al-Muhyi and al-Mumit in its reality. Later we will see that the transcendental relationship al-Hayy has with al-Muhyi and al-Mumit is very ‘arsh-like.
