I’m bleeding! and my eyes startle open—blood gushes

from her nose, but my husband doesn’t move, expects me

to take care of it as I’ve always done. She’s sobbing

but I can’t get out of bed to help her. I tell him,

Take her to my bathroom sink, then get some ice

from the patients’ kitchen, while I try to calm her, remind her

to keep her head forward over the sink, pinch the bridge

of her nose like the nurse showed her last time

I took her to Emergency.

Her father returns, ice in the facecloth he hands to her—

sits again in the chair, turns his hat

like a wheel. Mentally, I hurl curses at him

while she coughs blood and tears, presses

the icy facecloth against her nose, but the flood

won’t stop, and I direct him to take her to Emergency,

which makes her cry even harder.
