Naples Beach Hotel, Naples, Florida

The Reverend stood on the third floor balcony of his beach view suite. Although too dark to see the beach, the crashing waves let him know heâd arrived in Paradise. He inhaled deeply and took in the salty air, then went back into the suite to finish unpacking.
He might be here to set the record straight and make sure his congregation would never doubt the power of the Ritual of the Serpents, but he looked on this as a working vacation. While he worked to find out who had copied what heâd done to Katie, he planned to make sure he had himself some beach time. Too bad the nearest strip club was in Fort Myers, a fifty-minute drive from the hotel. Since he hadnât been laid in a while, catching a view of tits and ass would be mighty nice. He supposed he could go to the club and not drink. The last thing he needed was a DUI. He shook his head. Heâd catch so much hell from Daddy if that happened.
He finished placing his clothes in the drawers, then inspected the minibar. Daddy had his rules, and he understood them. At the age of eight, just before theyâd planned his mamaâs death, his daddy had told him he was a con-artist, and had said, âI take peopleâs money, and I want to keep takinâ my congregationâs money.â Daddy had also told him that heâd wanted his boy by his side as he grew their congregation and duped people from their hard-earned cash.
Over the years, Daddy had taken those fools who believed in the nonsense he spewed for every penny he could. But Daddy had been smart. Heâd forced them to live modestly. Vacations were a different thing, though. His daddy would make sure his congregation thought father and son were going on a camping trip to take time for reflection, and to be one with nature and God. The reality was, instead of camping in a shitty tent, theyâd taken trips to Hawaii, Costa Rica and the Bahamas. When heâd been old enough to enjoy Sin City, Daddy had taken him to Vegas for his twenty-first birthday and had bought him a woman for the night.
Smiling, he cracked open a tiny bottle of gin, then poured it into a glass. Yep, he and Daddyâd had some good times together. If only Daddy wasnât so damned old and sick. Losing him was going to be hard. Theyâd had a good gig going for many years. On the flip side, once Daddy was gone, he could disappear right along with him. His inheritance had grown to around three-quarters of a million. Heâd no longer need to live like a monk and could finally enjoy the money theyâd amassed.
He glanced around the luxury suite and envisioned a naked woman, maybe two, on his bed. When his cell phone rang, the vision vanished and he answered the call.
âWell?â Daddy asked. âMake it there okay?â
âIn my suite and unpacked.
