CHAPTER FIVE
A SHAFT OF MOONLIGHT
There was more coffee brought that evening as the two men took each piece of evidence and information they possessed, looked at it, discussed it, and then dissected it, putting aside that which could be discarded and keeping that which seemed to have some bearing, however indirectly, on Carradineâs assignment.
Finally, Corella closed the bulky file with a smack. âThere you have it. All that I know to be fact. I have my own suspicious, but to tell those may lead you along the wrong path entirely. There is something going on in the Red camp inside Portugal. I feel, indeed I know, most of it is concentrated around here, around Overo. There have been various comings and goings. Now this attack on you has brought things to a head. There is something here which you should get away from, but I know that nothing I can say or do will make you take the next plane out of Lisbon back to London. I have that feeling that somewhere, maybe very close by, a plan is being laid against you. That was a very crude attempt to kill you that they made this afternoon. The next time they try â and believe me there will be a next time â it will be something far more refined and subtle. They will now know the kind of opponent they face. How much they know of you and your reasons for being here; that I do not know. But I think it is more than sufficient for them to know that you represent a grave danger to them and that it is imperative for them to remove you permanently as soon as they possibly can.â
Carradine drained his coffee, sat back. Through the open window that looked out over the wide sweep of the bay, the sunset was a brilliant mixture of golds and reds and greens, all blending overhead into a deep blue-purple that had to be seen to be believed. The sea was calm, with only the faint splash of the surf as it rolled in a diagonal line of white on to the sand. Outside, it was utterly peaceful and calm that it seemed impossible for there to be trouble and danger here, bubbling away like some hellish witchâs brew just beneath the surface.
âThat island out there in the bay, he said, pointing. âDoes anyone live there?â
Corella glanced in the direction of his pointing finger, shook his head. âI have heard on no occasion of anyone living there. It used to be a wild bird sanctuary, although whether anyone ever goes there now is doubtful. A few of the fisher folk, perhaps, but that is all. Why are you interested in it? Merely because of its charm?â
âI was still thinking about those dead men washed up on the shore. It seems to me that the incoming tide is just in the right direction to sweep them in from there. It might even repay a visit.â
âWasnât there some talk that someone had tried to purchase that island, Father?â said the girl softly.
