I GUESS IT’S MY FAULT FOR OPENING THE DOOR

I’ve been over the locks on my heart a hundred times—polished the chains until they were silver enough to see my own reflection. This is how healing goes sometimes. In halfway points: loving in halves. Handling in halves. Opening up again in halves. It is hard to do things wholly when you have once been shattered.

I didn’t open halfway, though.

You knocked.

And I broke open like a dam. Poured myself into the first warm thing my body felt after years of darkness.

What else is the heart but a fist pounding on a door, over and over, a door that leads nowhere? I am so tired of knocking on the entrance to a purgatory.

Too often, I am the waiting room and not the destination.

Dust your feet on the welcome mat before entering me.

I have a habit of not washing away footprints.
