She didn’t know how much later the train stopped. Kenna blinked and sucked in a breath, shifting and immediately feeling the burn of all her aches. People stood in the aisle.

The doors beeped and slid open on one side of the train, and they filed out. She waited for the train car to empty, then eased to the edge of the seat and stood. She groaned aloud. Feels great. So good.

Every part of her body was stiff, but she made it off the train and bought a sandwich and caffeinated soda for now. The cookie and the chips she tucked in her bag for later.

Half an hour later, she was on another train, and by the time it reached Nottingham, night had fallen. They pulled into the red brick building, and Kenna forced herself to rouse. To push everything out and get where she was going without thinking about what she would do when she got there.

She followed the other commuters to the exit doors, where a line of taxis was parked outside at the curb. An older guy with not much hair leaned on the edge of his hood, reading a newspaper. He looked up as she approached. “Where to, Miss?”

Kenna recited the address from memory.

He frowned. “It’ll be about sixty quid.”

She dug out the cash and showed him.

“All right. Get in. You look like you’re about to drop.” He hesitated. “Don’t fall asleep in my backseat.”

She climbed in. “Thanks for driving me.”

“It’s not a favor, darlin’. You’re paying me.”

Kenna chuckled. “It’s been a long day.”

“You visiting? Holiday. What do they call it…you’re on vacation?”

“Something like that.” She buckled her seatbelt. “This is where my mother grew up, and where she met my dad.”

“Nottingham’s nice. Good place to grow up.”

Kenna watched out the window as he drove through the city, toward an older part with medieval-era looking buildings she couldn’t believe were still standing. All the houses were packed together like a miniature town. Peaked roofs and tiny front doors. Small windows with iron separating the panes.

An old church with gravestones in the grounds outside, all surrounded by a stone wall covered with moss.

The city gave way to winding roads. Plenty of trees. Bigger houses set back from the road.

He said, “The town you want is a little outside the city. It’ll be about twenty minutes.”

“Thanks.”

“Can’t say as I know much about it. Their school is pretty elite. You’ve got to pass a test to get in, and the tuition fees are astronomical. But it’s supposed to be the best.”

They drove past a brick wall that stretched nearly a mile. She saw the sign for a hospital, but the building looked derelict now.

She’d just about started to drift off in the warmth of the car when he pulled up outside a dark house at the end of a gravel road. A hedge lined the street. Once neat, it was now unkempt and in need of trimming.

“Here we are.”

She added a tip to the cost and said, “Thanks,” before she shoved the door open.
