The ferry docks at Rapness in the south of the island but Pierowall, 7 miles to the north, is the main village, spread around one of the best natural harbours in Orkney; it was once a strategic Viking base. There are several well-stocked food shops here, including Tulloch’s (01857-677373; 9am-9pm Mon-Sat year-round, plus 2-4.30pm Sun May-Sep), which houses the post office, and a bakery.

Getting There & Around

Air There are flights from Kirkwall to Westray (one way £35, 20 minutes, one or two daily Monday to Saturday).

Boat A ferry (Click here) links Kirkwall with Rapness (passenger/car £7.05/16.75, 1½ hours, daily).

Bicycle You can hire bikes from Westraak (Click here).

Bus The Westray Bus (01857-677758) carries passengers between the ferry at Rapness and Pierowall village; from May to September it meets the ferry, and picks up at Pierowall Hotel car park for the return journey. In winter, service is on request only, with advance booking necessary.
