Nineteen

UNCLE TOM CAME OVER for lunch that Sunday afternoon. Lizzie allowed me to cook, under her strict guidance. Guidance in her world means orders. I enjoyed having Ari in this part of my world. No matter what he said, I could keep it separate. I checked in on id earlier and it was time to leave id in complete silence. Time in silence to reflect on what id had done, the reason id came to be in that room. In quiet contemplation, id would realise what awaited. The following day, id and I would have a chat. Followed by making him my first official, not legal, first. The next transfers were arranged for Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday nights. A busy week lay ahead of me.

"Uncle Tom, would you like a whiskey?" I tried my utmost to make him forget seeing my face.

"Only if you pour one for yourself and one for Ari."

"I would prefer a beer, or a brandy, if you have any." Not the perfect man. How could Ari or anyone not like whiskey?

"What's happening with the sniper case?" I needed to push the idea of Ari not being perfect out of my head.

"Finley, on a Sunday? Why don't you finish your doctorates and become the profiler you were destined to be? Surround yourself with serial killers." Lizzie sat across from me on the patio. It was a standard Sunday afternoon, inappropriate conversation, good food, each enjoying their alcohol of choice. She had no idea I was surrounded by serial offenders, and meeting more every day. Not as potential new friends.

"You wanted to be a profiler?" My once biggest desire Ari questioned, but my other face he took in his stride.

"Our Fin would have been one of the greats. It's uncanny how well she understands them. In all my years I have never seen someone grasp their motives as much as she can. I can't tell you how many times she cracked a case even when she was still a student." Uncle Tom beamed with pride. His words gave me hope we could restore our relationship.

"Yes, that was the dream. But I joined the army, and the rest is history. So, what has our boy been up to? I've heard nothing new on the news."

"Because we are banning the media from reporting on him. If he's doing it for the attention, we don't want to boost his ego anymore."

I drank the rest of my whiskey staring out towards where the ocean glistened under a cooler autumn sun.

"You're not doing it for the attention, are you? No, you're on a mission. Show me what that mission is. I want to understand. I know it hurts you, makes you angry, and these people you see on the other side of your scope remind you. What is it about them? Do you work shifts? Is that why there is no discernible pattern? You don't want to be violent. You're not using your hands, not torturing them. But something is torturing you. I want to help you.
