The Friend
“Why do I have to come? He’s your friend!” I told my brother. He was trying to get me to go out with him to a birthday party at his friend’s house.
“Come on, it will be fun, you’ll mingle with people, it will do you good,” he said.
“I don’t want to mingle with people.” I said.
“That’s the problem. You’ve been a complete shut in for such a long time, ever since Jeff. You’ve got to get out of the house, experience life.”
“Hey, I’m not a shut in because of Jeff, I just choose to focus on my dreams and goals instead of other people. Other people just distract me from my life and I can’t afford it anymore. I’m old enough that I need to get serious about where I’m going in life.”
“Jesus Christ Natasha, you’re 27 years old, you’ve got a whole life ahead of you and one night of mingling for going to do you good. Come, this is not a discussion. Listen to your brother. Respect your elders.”
“Oh whatever Robert, you are 2 years older than me.”
“Yeah and two years wiser. Will you please just put on some clothes and come with me? Do it for me then, not for yourself.”
“Ugh,” I groaned at him. Robert and I were fairly close and he’s been a wonderful brother through the years, always looking out for my well-being. But sometimes he could be really pushy. I knew he was right. I knew he just wanted the best for me, but I meant what I said. My experiences with people haven’t been that great throughout the years and it’s because, apparently, I cared more about them than they cared about me. I had an intense sense of compassion and I always tried to help people as much as I could with whatever they needed even if that meant putting their needs above mine. This, predictably, led to getting screwed over by lots of people. It was entirely my fault. Nobody really cares about other people as much as they care about themselves, besides me. It was a simple difference of expectations and I had no one to blame but myself so to rectify that problem I decided to go in the other direction and simply care about me and nobody but me. I was going to work on my goals and forget everyone else. It wasn’t the most mature thing to do in retrospect but it was important that I did it. Maybe later I could restore some balance to my life, after I lived my life from both perspectives.
“Please Natasha, do it for me.” Robert said.
I couldn’t say no to his personal request. He has helped me so much over the years and he knew exactly what he was doing by pulling that “do it for me” card.
“Fine,” I said, crassly and went into my bedroom to put on some party clothes.
“Wear something nice, you know where we’re going,” he said. Robert himself was dressed
