Chapter Thirteen

When we got to Lorenzo’s house, the first thing I noticed was the musky smell of Old Spice cologne. It was a very simple two-bedroom place, the kind with all the necessities but no extravagance. Everything was in its place. It hurt to be here, to see Lorenzo’s personality everywhere, and not hear his voice.

We did a quick search of the living room and kitchen, but I didn’t see anything unusual.

“Do you know what we are looking for?” I asked.

“Not really. He told D it was a present on a table.” Vin went to the dining room and found nothing. I followed and went to Lorenzo’s bedroom. A gift bag sat on a small table in front of the TV.

“Got it,” I said, grabbing the bag and giving it to him.

“This is it?” Vin peeked in. His eyes filled with tears.

“What is it?”

He took out a bowling baby play set and a little black T-shirt. He held it up, and showing me the #5 printed on the back. He turned it over. It said Italian Panthers on the front.

Tatiana had told me of Lorenzo’s obsession with bowling. My eyes filled with tears, thinking he had this made for Gio’s baby.

Vinny sat down on the bed and put his face in his hands. I sat down next to him and hugged him. He leaned into me and let me cradle him, his grip strong on my waist, and I ran my fingers through his hair. I would do this as long as he needed. He was torn up, and it broke my heart. These men loved each other, just like I loved my family. I couldn’t help myself. I gave him a simple peck on his lips.

“What was that?” He seemed surprised as he pulled away from me.

“A kiss,” I said in the same tone he used with me before.

“I know, but why?” He was still in shock.

“Because I wanted to. It’s just a kiss, Vin, not our first, you know,” I said with a smile, trying to imitate his voice.

He shook his head. “Cris, you are too much. Let’s go. We need to make overnight bags and get food to hungry Italians, especially Gio.” He wiped his tears away. “When he gets hungry, it gets ugly.”

I grabbed his hand. When I pulled him up, he leaned in and gave me another quick, delicious kiss. It took me by surprise, but I liked it, a little too much.

“Sorry, I am getting the hang of these little kisses you like.” He smiled a little. “Thank you for being here,” he whispered, looking at me. “Let’s go.”

He made me melt. Even in this horrible situation, I could not help the leap in my heart.

We went to Giovanni and Luisa’s apartment and made them a bag with clothes, toiletries, and other things to make them comfortable at the hospital.

Our next stop was Vin’s apartment. I was curious to see his place. He parked his jeep in front of a condo building. We walked through the lobby.
