CHAPTER THIRTEEN

I was briefly blinded by the intense light that the explosion gave off. Then, as I blinked in the dark, I realized that the lights had also gone out. On instinct, I was already moving. Being near the front, I vaulted onto the altar and cut across it. The ringing in my ears and the chaos of the room contributed to my lack of balance, and I tripped on a cord. Samantha fell over me because she was so close behind.

Colleen knelt and screamed in my face, “Shield yourself.”

I bit back a sob, grabbing onto Samantha as the world felt like it tipped on its axis, the screaming in the building grating across my mind. Fear was crawling up my throat.

Suddenly, a firm, warm presence was pressed into my side. Patagonia and Mac were there in the darkness. I pulled in a ragged breath, tasting blood in my mouth from the fall, and I called upon my magic and raised my shields.

Instantly, the terror and panic lessened, though they did not disappear. I breathed again and felt my heart beat slower. The ground steadied underneath me, and I carefully looked around.

The church was at least half empty, and a majority of the people were moving to the exit. When I blinked, I could still see the explosion burned into my mind’s eye. I tried to take a moment to study it in case I had seen something important.

I pulled magic into me and worked a calming spell and held more magic ready to heal, because I feared that it would be necessary. I could sense that Vanessa was already working magic, her emotions racing, and I pushed magic toward her, something I hadn’t previously tried.

Oriented and clearheaded, I grabbed Colleen’s offered hand and stood then reached back to grab Samantha as well. We moved across the stage and carefully went down the steps.

Crowds of people blocked my view, and chairs turned on their sides blocked the path even as people tried to get out of the way.

“Step aside,” Colleen shouted in a voice that carried so much authority that I took half a step back before I realized it was not a command for me.

The people parted when they realized who we were, and even in the chaos, I felt calm come over me. I could help. I was meant to do this, and even though part of me was frightened and cowering, the majority of me was divorced from the moment, observing, ready to take action.

The smell hit me hard: melted plastic, coppery blood, and burned flesh tore at my sinuses. Instantly, I worked a spell to block it, for it was a distraction. Without thought, I moved toward Vanessa, arriving at her back before I even recognized her.

Kneeling next to her, I realized that Vin was at her other side, Tiffany cradled in his arms, her face hidden behind blood. They were healing her. Vin was as pale as I had ever seen him, gray and clearly in shock.
