Chapter Thirteen

Present

Asheville, North Carolina

Emma wandered down the aisle of the supermarket. Although she was shopping for her brother’s stay she wasn’t really seeing much of anything that sparked her interest or appetite. She looked at several boxes of pasta thinking she could make him a lasagna. Grant loved lasagna.

They had eaten breakfast and discussed what Cooper had told Grant. Grant’s advice was the same as Cooper’s. Go home for a visit. Stay away for awhile. Let Cooper take care of the case and then she could come back. The problem was, the winter holidays weren’t too far away, and it would be hard to secure a substitute. So, she didn’t feel right about taking a week. Even more, it was hard to take an extended period of time off without a doctor’s note.

So she argued this point with him until he seemed to get it. But she knew that although he’d grown quiet, he was not going to let it rest. At least not for long.

And now here she stood. She wanted to cook him something he liked considering she’d darted from the house as soon as he’d left for his run. He was going to be pissed when he got back and found she was gone.

She studied the box more closely than she needed. Her mind wandered to their earlier conversation. He had delivered a verbal punch to the gut.

Knowing what she did, hearing it confirmed by her brother made her feel worse. Of course, he hadn’t meant to do it. But hearing all that he had to say did just that.

And to compound it all she’d messed up yet again last night. She’d panicked. What had happened had been so powerful, so visceral. But, she had been so utterly terrified when she woke up that she hadn’t give any thought to how Cooper would feel this morning. Waking up alone like he did. She’d left, again. God, what was wrong with her?

She was so selfish. And Grant had pointed that out too. Last night had been the start of something new. Had she ruined it? The dread she felt sat in her stomach like bad food rolling around until she was sure she would throw up. Emma wasn’t sure if she’d be able to live with herself if she sabotaged things for them, again. Wasn’t that what she was doing? Deliberately ruining things so she wouldn’t have to worry about them being ruined down the road?

She had loved Cooper all her life. And she had made vows to him, and to their marriage. By leaving she had also left him to second guess those things. She imagined he was second guessing last night now, too. Shit.

Emma wandered around the store feeling lost. Just like she had felt in the beginning. Back then she’d had to remind herself to breathe. It’d hurt to even do that. And lying in the hospital afterward for more time than she would like to admit, she didn’t want to breathe anymore.

As time passed she learned how to function minute to minute.
