In the hushed confines of their CID office, Hogarth and Palmer huddled around Hogarth’s laptop, their eyes fixed on the scene unfolding before them in the black and grey CCTV images. Tension seemed to pour from the images as they watched, ready to delve into something deeply unpleasant. Grim as it was, Hogarth hoped that he would find something. The camera lens pointed over the access lane behind Pirate Dan’s, angled to see most of it as it curved away around the back end of the theme park towards the top of the pier. The moon cast a feeble glow on events, with the lights of the pier picked out in the background. The camera timestamp said it was just after 21:00. Hogarth gave in to the urge to click forward using the scrollbar, accelerating the footage until he saw movement at the bottom of the screen. A wide black shape appeared and walked on towards the cars parked in the middle distance. It was the silhouette of a broad woman in a dark coat, walking with a briefcase at her side.

“Dot Turner,” said Palmer. Hogarth didn’t say a word. His eyes were fixed on her silhouette as she shuffled farther into the murk. She began to slow down as she came nearer to the parked cars. They watched her draw to a halt. She looked down at her hand, and the indicators on the SUV parked in front of her blinked on and off. So far, everything seemed normal.

Then he appeared.

Hogarth and Palmer leaned in close to the screen, watching as a narrow shape drifted into view, hesitating before it pushed on in steady pursuit. The figure wore a dark jacket with a hood pulled tight about his head. The thin man approached with the grace of a predator. He moved towards the woman’s back – a man who knew exactly what he was doing. As Dot Turner opened the car door, he slowed behind her. The woman pulled the door wide and leaned in as if to place her briefcase on the passenger side. Like a venomous spider sensing its chance, the man moved in and made one ruthless strike. A single blow sent the woman down, falling over the edge of the car seat, her head clearly striking the bottom edge of the car chassis. Hogarth watched the woman fall, landing on her back, face peering up at the sky, lifting her hand above her head to block out light from the theme park. Looking up, she would have seen the man in the dark jacket looming over her. Hogarth noticed Palmer gripping her hands tight, her fingers turning pale as she locked them together. Hogarth didn’t feel any better. He blinked and fixed his eyes on the scene. The thin man showed no mercy. He dropped to his haunches, delivering blow after blow against the woman’s face before he picked up her head by her hair and smashed it against the concrete. It was amazing that so little blood had been left behind.
