ARE YOU READY?

Willingness comes before any growth: willingness to stop drinking and using; willingness to try a new way of living; willingness to commit ourselves to our spiritual growth; willingness to put that growth before our personal comfort. In short, the willingness to let go. Step Six requires willingness. After completing Step Five, the Big Book suggests we take some time to reflect on what we’ve learned in the inventory process, then see if we are ready to let go of the destructive qualities we’ve uncovered.

In Buddhist terms, willingness refers back to Right Intention. How committed are we to the process of recovery? When I first worked Step Six, my desperate desire to pull my life together gave me the willingness to let go of my habitual behaviors and reactions, and to completely reevaluate my life and my approach to living.

In meditation, we also have to find a motivation to let go. As we struggle with learning how to calm the mind and bring equanimity to our experience, we may have to ask ourselves: How committed am I to awakening?

On the three-month retreat, I learned about how difficult it was to let go, how becoming “entirely ready” wasn’t as easy as it sounded.
