The next morning, I beeline for Auntie Grace before she can leave her room and dodge me all day. I can see she was planning just that when she opens the door, dressed and ready for the day.

“My, Cassandra, aren’t we peppy this morning?” Auntie says, stepping out of her room. I don’t let her go far.

“Auntie Grace, we need to talk.”

“Oh, we do, honey bun. But I have so much work—”

“What work? Most of the guests are gone. Please stop avoiding me and have a conversation with me.” I’m putting my foot down on this because I’m tired of all these secrets. My aunt gives me a long look, and I can see the moment she gives in. Walking over to the love seat, she settles down as Birdie jumps up onto her lap. The cat has been sticking extra close to me anytime I’m in the inn, but thankfully, still not in my bedroom. Except for that one time. I’m still deciding how I feel about her.

“I haven’t been avoiding you, sweetie.”

“Yes, you have,” I interrupt before Auntie comes up with a million excuses. I’m sure she can because she’s the smartest person I have ever met. “And I need you to explain why. You keep sending me out there, away from the inn, but I’m floundering. It’s the whole reason I came home in the first place. And yes, I’m supposed to be helping you out, but clearly you don’t need that physically. So why am I here? I don’t understand, and I need to understand because I’m tired of all the secrets.”

The words tumble out of me, and I feel a little out of breath as I finally stop. Auntie Grace gives me a sympathetic look, but it’s not patronizing. She’s truly feeling for me and that makes me feel better immediately.

“What a mess this is, honey pie.” My aunt sighs, patting the space near her. I walk over, settling down while Birdie rearranges herself so that she can watch me. I try not to meet the cat’s eye, but it’s difficult when it feels like she’s staring right into my soul.

“I won’t lie, I was happy to hear you needed to come home because you’ve been gone such a long time. Your place is here, within these walls and amongst these people. This town fuels your bloodline and your magic. It is the best place for you to learn about who you truly are.”

“I thought I knew who I was,” I confess honestly, because isn’t that the whole reason I left? I figured myself out. I wanted to go out there and see the world, away from the prying eyes of the town. Yet, here I am, in the midst of a murder investigation by association, with the whole town watching us.

“Just because you knew who you were before does not mean you are the same person now. People grow and evolve. It’s the natural flow of things. Your magic was bound to bring you back to me.
