Chapter Thirteen

Leo

Leo slept late.

He always slept late, but the reason for that had changed. Back home he overslept because there wasn’t much to do upon waking. His only task was to help in the gardens, and since their farms didn’t rely on the suns, that work could be done at any hour.

Here on the surface, he overslept because sleep itself was difficult. He didn’t tell the others, but he tossed and turned each night. There was too much light in the room.

The moon and stars were fascinating, and sure, he wanted to stretch his wings and explore the sky, but when it came to sleep, he needed absolute darkness. The heavy cloth coverings hanging over the windows were thick and layered but the lights outside seeped in through the edges, and even that little glow was enough to keep him up.

Everything was strange. He understood the ridiculousness of his mindset. He’d wanted change. Craved it. Now he had it and it bothered him in the oddest ways. He couldn’t wait to return home. The city was an adventure, and he’d be glad when he could reminisce on these moments, but he also looked forward to the entire ordeal being in the past.

The noise was too much. The brightness was too much. The smothering amount of bodies moving around every place they went was way too much.

He exited the bedroom and found Demyan and Myron in the kitchen, snacking and talking about nothing that sparked his interest.

“Has she contacted us?” he asked.

“Nothing yet,” Myron replied. “I wonder what her meeting is about.”

“I’m more curious to know if her brother calmed down,” Leo grumbled. “I could feel it in the air. He was ready to shift and get his ass kicked.”

Demyan smirked but didn’t add anything.

“It’s just the usual protectiveness. I’m sure we’d feel the same if we had sisters,” Myron said.

Leo poured himself a glass of water, head shaking. “Nah. Ksenia’s practically my sister and I couldn’t care less about protecting her from a potential mate.”

“Because she’d destroy you if you tried,” Demyan mused.

Leo pointed at him. “Exactly. She can handle herself and I’m happy to let her. I don’t stand in front of her when rock eaters are snapping at her, and I’m not going to stand in front of her when she meets the guy who thinks he can turn her into an obedient mate.”

He chuckled under his breath. He’d been wondering about his cousin a lot in the last few days, but they’d yet to figure out a way to track the others down. Nonetheless, he didn’t worry about Ksenia. He had more concern for whoever got in her way. This very moment she was likely annoying Santer and making Dmitri play parent to their squabbling.

“Anyhow, Mara strikes me as the same.” He drained the glass of water. “She doesn’t need protecting.”

“You say that, and yet we all had the urge to last night, before we knew who Berge was,” Myron said. “We all tensed, and yeah in hindsight it was stupid, but it was instinct.
