I woke once or twice. Gia was still there. Then I woke, and she was gone. The huge wolf had managed to slip from the bed and even pull the covers more completely over me, and I hadn’t heard her. I felt a loss, but I felt really, really good, too, the best I had in a long time. I smiled, and I slept.

When I descended in the morning, the house grew quiet, and by the time I made it to the bottom of the stairs, every pair of eyes had turned to watch me.

I thought it was interesting that Monique was at the base of the stairs. She was turned half away, but she watched me carefully. I descended the remaining distance and then moved to a spot immediately in front of her. I looked up into her eyes and smiled. “Good morning, Monique. I’m going to need your help.”

“Elisabeth and the alphas talked to me.”

“Do you mind?”

I don’t think she thought about it. Her hand lifted, and I was ready for it as she touched me. Together, we smiled. We stood like that for an eternity, but was only a moment.

And then Cassie was there. She set her hand on Monique’s, just touching, and slowly I turned to look into her eyes. She looked uncertain at first, but then she began to smile.

And then Michaela was there, moving around us, but I was lost in Cassie’s eyes. “Interesting,” said the fox. “Angel, get Ember here. Now. Cassie, keep your hand there.”

I didn’t really pay attention. I simply stared into Cassie’s eyes, both of us smiling.

Others moved closer. It didn’t register, not really, but I realized later it was Lara. “Don’t touch them,” Michaela said. “Bree, can you answer me?”

I could hear her, but I was lost in Cassie’s eyes.

“Monique,” Michaela said, “Don’t stop touching her, but ask her if she can hear you?”

“Bree.”

And my gaze shifted back to Monique.

“Stop,” Michaela said. “Cassie, say her name.”

“Bree.” And my head turned back to Cassie.

“Cassie,” said Michaela, “ask her if she can speak.”

“Bree,” Cassie said. “Can you talk?”

“Oh, yes,” I said. “Can you feel it, Cassie? Can you, Monique?”

“I feel something,” Cassie said. “I don’t know what it is.”

Then someone else was there. “What’s happening?”

“Ember,” Michaela said. “I am your alpha. You will do exactly what I tell you. Come stand where I am. Do not touch anyone, and do not talk, not yet.”

Michaela shifted, and then there was another wolf, and I could feel a connection. I reached out and grabbed her hand, pulling it towards Cassie’s and Monique’s. There was a moment of resistance, which then crumbled. Ember’s hand opened, and when I set it in place, she bridged both Monique’s hand and Cassie’s, and my gaze snapped to her eyes.

“Like this,” I said.

“I don’t understand,” Ember whispered.

I smiled again. “Do not be afraid. Monique, your mate is frightened. Only you can end this.”

She paused, and then she withdrew her touch. I slumped, and if Michaela hadn’t suddenly been there to support me, I might have collapsed.
