Chapter 6

Griffin edged his way around the side of a large wooden building and walked down the small alleyway between it and another building. When he reached the end of the two buildings, he paused, pressing himself against one of them as he looked out over the open area between him and the warehouse he was heading for.

It was still pretty early in the morning but light out enough that he could no longer hide in the shadows. Once he left the relative safety of the two buildings, whoever might be watching would be able to spot him in a heartbeat.

His nerves buzzed with adrenaline, but that was nothing new. He felt like he had been riding the edge of danger forever. There had been a few moments of stolen time here and there over the years but he learned a long time ago never to let his guard down.

It kept him alive.

Hopefully, it would keep him alive a little longer. Griffin had every intention of keeping his promise to Ollie, and that meant getting to the warehouse by any means necessary. He wasn’t going to break that promise even if it meant he had to go through an army of Sentries.

He was just praying that he didn’t. So far, he had been lucky. After creating a distraction—namely blowing up the house after everyone had left—Griffin had snuck away and caught a ride with a trucker north to Idaho.

It had taken him nearly a day to get a ride, another two days just to reach his destination. If Ollie and everyone else followed his directions, they would be leaving sometime today to head for the safe haven Griffin had set up for them.

Griffin just needed to make it to the warehouse, and then they could all go together. His only problem was the sneaking suspicion he had that his warehouse was being watched. It wasn’t anything he could put his finger on, but something felt off.

Everything seemed just as it should be.

Birds flew overhead. Music played somewhere off in the distance. Waves crashed against the docks. The sounds of conversation could be heard here and there. There was a roar of boat engines in the background. The thick smell of algae, fresh air, water, and gasoline fumes from boats floated on the air.

The marina was surprisingly teeming with life. Fishermen were going to work, taking their boats out onto the water. Several individuals were loitering around a café at the edge of the marina, more stood out in front of a small bait and tackle shop.

The warehouse that Griffin had purchased was on the far side of the marina from where he currently hid. It housed his jeep, a boat, some supplies, and his pride and joy—a de Havilland DHC-2 Mk 3 Turbo Beaver, a single-engine, high-wing, propeller-driven, STOL aircraft fitted with amphibious floats. It could carry a crew of one, six passengers, and a 2,100 pound cargo payload.

The Beaver was designed for flight in rugged and remote areas of the world.
