LEARN THAT PROGRESS TAKES TIME

Jeric didn’t just need me to be on board with his vision, he also needed Emily. And she took longer to convince. Blackwood was turning a profit because of all the wages I was paying out, but there were years of debt that needed to be paid back. And there were more than a dozen major buildings in the centre of the village she would need to rebuild if she agreed to take part. Buildings she would have to pay for out of her class’s stipend.

Emily took the matter seriously.

She ran the numbers.

Something Fitz pointed out I should have done before agreeing. The numbers came back ‘tolerable’. Her words, not mine. So, Emily committed to purchasing the Scaled Growth upgrade, binding Blackwood’s future tighter to mine. And I committed to helping Jeric achieve his vision, seeing my people housed no matter the cost, making a longer-term investment that would see me one day become one of the kingdom’s wealthiest property owners.

Jeric argued with the king’s royal scholars for the next several days, applying pressure, using every trick he knew. I didn’t have an exploit to trade the king this time. What I had was the ability to give the king an opportunity to farm development points. An opportunity to give his people insights into the system they had never had before. It was an opportunity to make his kingdom significantly stronger. An opportunity for him to make a great deal of experience.

And they knew it.

That’s why Jeric managed to not only secure the royal builders, but have the king pay their labour. He also managed to make the royal builders our go-between for the materials we needed, opening doors we never could have gotten close to.

I was happy with the trade.

I was less happy with the three days I spent in the vault, explaining my understanding of the system to the king. The king’s compulsion overwhelmed my free will as easily as in the past. The increase to my mark had done nothing more than leave me with missing health and constant headaches.

But once it was over, Blackwood had access to the greatest builders in Radian.

Pavatin was giddy with excitement. The royal builders had never taken on a project this large. Officially, there were only a thousand royal builders that the king employed, but there were thousands of builders stuck at their third and fourth thresholds, waiting on their books for a chance to get through. The royal builders only called them in when they needed more labour. Building an entire village that challenged their skills was unheard of. And Pavatin had proudly told me he’d requested for all of them to come to Blackwood.

The cost of the materials was…something I didn’t want to think about. But this was the only thing Jeric had ever asked me for, and I was willing to try to help him with it. Lucky for him, Beldose was willing, even happy, to loan me the money. Fitz’s detailed plan and profit projections made it an easy sell.
