Holly, Lena and I are crowded by the front of the bus, positioned in a tight gaggle round the luggage rack. It’s a rare occurrence that we are all on the same bus, given various school clubs, lifts from parents, etc., but it’s nice to have company for once. It’s a challenge trying to hold the grimy pole with one hand and cling on to the lukewarm dregs of coffee left over from my free last lesson, but I’m trying to make it look as effortless as possible.

As sixth-formers, legend says that we should rule the back seats and bully any younger students who have the audacity to sit there. However, the reality is that the current year eights lounging across the last two rows, bags and feet across the chairs, are right little scary turds, and I’d rather stand than risk being humiliated by them. Demi, the sly cow, has managed to nab herself a decent seat in the middle of the bus, saved for her by Monica. Holly was outraged, given that it’s usually reserved for her, but was quickly told by Demi, You snooze, you lose.

“OK, so I’ve been working on having an orgasm using just my mind.” Lena closes her eyes and points to her temples. She wobbles as the bus turns the corner and I have to grab her before she falls.

“What are you on about?” Holly scrunches up her face, unimpressed by Lena’s eccentricities.

“There was an experiment back in the nineties where some woman managed to get herself off by imagining her chakras moving up and down her spine.”

“And you believe that?”

“They measured her heart rate and everything and it proved she wasn’t faking.”

“That’s ridiculous. You sound like that woman on the news who said she had an alien lover. Rose, back me up here?”

“That one was a bit of a stretch.”

“Just a bit of a stretch?” Holly says incredulously.

Lena shrugs. “I wouldn’t be so quick to write it off. Stranger things have happened—”

“There’s zero proof aliens even exist, and even if they did I’m sure they have better things to do than stick their alien chodes into a lonely Karen from Scunthorpe. What about just getting a vibrator? That’s the normal way to get yourself off.” Holly leans back on the pile of bags behind her and yawns dramatically. A year eleven sitting near us nudges his mate and looks incredibly interested in what Holly has to say. I shift myself to block his view at the same time as my phone starts to ring in my pocket.

Lena’s gaze is on me, but I’m not going to look at her in case it makes Holly suspicious. Obviously, Lena knows I’ve been spending every night with Promises and that it has been far from pleasurable. I’m actively trying not to connect to my body in that way because if I let myself enjoy it, even once, my body might decide that it’s OK to react to that type of stimulation. If my body thinks that, God knows what it might do in physio.
