CHAPTER TEN
UNTOUCHABLE
“So let me get this straight,” Jack said in a facetiously even tone over the comm-link. “You guys know this is probably a trap, but since the bad guys don’t know that you know, so you’re still going to raid the joint anyway?”
“Correct,” Calloway confirmed.
Jack paused for an additional second. “This may be the single dumbest plan I’ve ever heard.”
Calloway snorted. “Thanks for the vote of confidence, bruh.”
“Hey, I calls it like I sees it.”
“That would be why we brought SWAT and a bomb squad,” Calloway said. “Should cover all our bases depending on what type of trap this might be.”
“What type of trap this might be,” Jack muttered, shaking his head. “What is even my life right now?”
“Oh, quit whining,” Libby said as she passed him a can of Coke and sat down beside him at the conference table. “He’s the one in mortal danger, not you.”
“I’m concerned,” Jack insisted. “I complain when I’m concerned.”
Libby popped her Sprite open and propped the chair up on two legs, propping her own up on the table. “You must be concerned twenty-four seven.”
Jack casually stuck his shoe under her chair and tipped it further back an inch. She flailed her arms to maintain balance and then shot a glare at him. He just grinned and drank his Coke.
“Doing alright, Kam?” he asked.
“Just ordered room service,” his girlfriend said. “This hotel has surprisingly good vegetarian options.”
“Save me some dessert.”
Libby waggled her brows. “Bow chicka wow wow.”
Jack rolled his eyes. “That wasn’t a euphemism.”
“It wasn’t?” Kamala said, feigning disappointment. “Am I no longer appealing to you, Jack?”
Libby cackled. Jack sighed. “Look, don’t encourage her, hon.”
“Sorry. Couldn’t resist.”
The door to the lab opened and Larry came in. “Sorry I’m late, guys. Are we about to be underway?”
“Yep,” Jack said. “SWAT’s doing the perimeter check. They should be breaching soon.”
“Good,” he said, sitting next to Jack at the table. “Are we live?”
“Live and in color,” Calloway confirmed as he tugged on his helmet. The projector in the lab blinked to life with a pale green night vision heads up display. “Well, sort of.”
He stood to one side of an old, greying brick building that had once been part of a train yard. The trains had long since stopped going through the area, so its streets were blocked off and the buildings were abandoned. Most had broken windows and faded, cracked bricks. The police usually had to come by every so often to drive out the squatters and homeless population. Aside from that, it would be the perfect place for the illegal fights, since it was closed to the public and was far enough away from the city that no one would likely hear the noise.
The main center of the train yard was down a long, sloping gravel path. The building had three floors and had been used for train repairs as well as construction. None of the agents of SWAT were in plain view; rather, they had used the surrounding buildings for cover and approached in pairs.
