I have just written to the people at the Khan to say that I refuse their proposal to dramatise my book.

This rejection has been more painful than I expected. It has brought home to me how far apart the two sides are. In the past I used to celebrate Seder at the homes of Israeli friends, yet here I am rejecting this offer to have my work presented to an Israeli public.

The Israelis have their own problems with their extremists and the settlers and are caught up in their own sense of victimhood, and we on our side feel vulnerable and suspicious, having so often in the past been cheated out of our inheritance. When I visited them in Jerusalem they gave no indication that they would want to visit me in Ramallah to see for themselves the actual setting in which the events of the book took place. We are no more than a twenty-minute drive by car from where they are in Jerusalem. Both the Scottish playwright David Grieg, who wrote the stage adaptation for the Traverse Theatre in Edinburgh, and Philip Howard, who directed it, visited from the UK and spent time in Ramallah before tackling the play.
