As the reception was ending, Carly looked for Jack.

They hadn’t talked at all since arriving at the Marron house. Carly had been too busy going into the sleuthing business, while Jack had proceeded to melt discreetly into the background, watching and waiting. He never once, as far as she could see, directly approached any member of the Marron family, or questioned a single one of their friends. And yet, wherever a Marron—any Marron at all—was, Jack would materialize on the sidelines, seemingly everywhere and nowhere, at once.

Carly had known that her husband was a talented detective, the best on the force. But actually seeing him in action, Carly’s heart ran as if she were encountering Jack for the first time. Watching him move so confidently from room to room, group to group, without once losing his cool or drawing unnecessary attention to himself flooded Carly with an erotic pride of possession. This was her man. Hers and no one else’s. She’d gone through a great deal to make that fact an unalterable truth.

Of course, that unalterable truth didn’t seem all that obvious to anyone observing them at Gregory Marron’s wake. Not only did Jack and Carly never speak, he never so much as looked in her direction. Granted, he was working here, not socializing, but nonetheless, Carly wasn’t accustomed to receiving the silent treatment from her husband.

That’s why she sought out Jack at the end of the wake.

He was getting back into his squad car when Carly stuck her head in through the open driver’s side window.

“Hi, honey,” she said.

“Hey, Carly.”

“You know, I was thinking: What do you say we take the kids out tonight and do something really fun? Maybe a movie or miniature golf? You know how Parker loves it when you guys go golfing together, and we haven’t been in such a long time.”

“I’m working tonight, Carly.” He started up the engine so that she had to strain to make out the last part of his sentence. “I’m going to keep working until I can safely put this whole sordid mess behind us.”
