CHAPTER TWENTY-NINE

Kendra’s new circadian rhythm had become completely vampiric. Once again, she found herself sleeping until nearly nine PM having pulled another all-nighter at the Roundhouse.

She stirred from her slumber and shuffled into the kitchen like a zombie. Her hair was a rat’s nest, and her mouth was so pasty she could smell her breath without even trying.

The government had rented a home for her, and she had to admit, it was pretty nice. It was a big place for just one person. The home was built for a family, something Kendra longed to have one day.

There were three bedrooms, two bathrooms, two fireplaces, a den, an expansive yard and an elaborate wrap-around deck that leveled up. There were no streetlights on her block, so the star gazing at night was spectacular.

As she began to put on a pot of coffee, her mind vacillated between her recent findings and…Brant. The truth was, he was on her mind more and more. She wondered if it was the empty house that was keeping her distracted. In LA, she had a tiny condo. It met all of her needs. But a beautiful, single home like the one they had her in was simply a reminder of where she’d thought she’d be by now, and with whom.

As the coffee brewed, she rubbed the back of her neck. Being hunched over in one position for hours on end had taken its toll. Brant used to give incredible back massages, she recalled to herself.

Her research into Hamid Ajam, the caseworker she had recently discovered, had not yet borne real fruit. The hunt had eventually directed her to the State Department’s Intercountry Adoption and Bureau of Consular Affairs. There she unearthed some statistics that were a little surprising. Though on the lower side of the graph, nearly a thousand children in their early teens are adopted from overseas each year. In terms of the Middle East being the place of origin, it was all over the map: Jordan, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Kuwait, and Oman.

When she had entered Hamid’s full name, position and last known organization into the government’s database, it came back with a few hits. He appeared to have been inactive for quite a while - as far as working with the U.S. Government. However, there were still current officials and administrators involved in safeguarding foreign children who might have insight into this Hamid and Hope International. Kendra quickly zeroed in on them and had been shot-gunning emails seeking information all week.

She grabbed a hot cup of joe and headed out onto the deck in just her PJs and socks. Sliding her cell into her flannel pocket, she pulled open the sliding door and stepped out into the cool country air.

She could get used to this, she thought. In the moon glow, she spotted the flickering eyes of a raccoon as it ran beneath the backyard hammock. It then dawned on her that she had yet to try that thing out. Maybe she shouldn’t; she kidded herself. One nap in that and she’d be making an offer on the place.
