The Threat

“Boss, can I ask you a question?”

Diverting my attention away from my phone to my driver, I waited for whatever he thought was important enough to disturb me.

“If we had the kid, why didn’t we just kill him, too? His mother was a waste of time.”

“That’s what’s wrong with you young boys today. You don’t understand that taking something from someone can make them valuable. Giving someone somebody can create a weakness.” I lectured, taking off my leather gloves.

“You’ve been trying to best them for about two years. Aren’t you tired of that?”

An unconscious tick made my teeth grind and my chest ache. Since someone had shot me, the pain there had never gotten better. Some say that I shouldn’t have lived, but I know that greatness is never taken away in an instant. It takes more than disloyalty and three shots to take down a king.

“You don’t understand a fucking thing.” I pulled out my gun and checked how many bullets were left. “Let’s go for a ride.”

“Where to?” He peered at me from the rearview mirror.

“I want to see the city. Cincinnati doesn’t have a view like this one. It's been a while since I’ve been home.” I pulled out bullets and began reloading.

He pulled away from the cigar shop I’d been watching. I thought Ward would be around here today. I’d had a surprise for him that would have to wait a little longer. He consistently had people watching it, so the explosives in the back would have to sit tight.

“The Greeks were easier to take over than I thought. What I needed was a young girl’s hope. You guys gave me a dynasty ripe for the taking. She was willing to give me her son for a fortune she didn’t deserve. As easy as it was, she brought my enemies right to my front door. You fools were too weak to kill a woman and her boyfriend, so it left unfinished business. They did me a favor by killing the guard you put in charge of my clinic and the bitch who reneged on giving me the bastard son she carried. She had two babies. How’d she fail to give me one of them?” I finished loading the gun and sat back.

“How do you know these people?” He turned the corner, giving me a tour of the river as he drove beside it.

I didn’t mind this question or telling him whatever he wanted to know. Who was he going to tell?

“They used to be my family. Being pushed out of the way by them was a mistake on my part. I should have never trusted them. Never trust the word of people who have something to gain by your death. Domino was the father of that baby. Taking his child and making sure that he never saw him again was the same deal I’d gotten. Why would he deserve any better?”

“He doesn’t.” That was the first thing he’d said that I agreed with.

“No, not at all.
