Kain hadn’t mentioned the letter yet, but I knew he’d read it by the way he kept looking at me all throughout the feast. I’d caught myself staring into his eyes on more than one occasion.

What did he think? My stomach had been doing flips all evening. Some from nerves, some from just being near him. When his hand brushed against mine before he slipped out with Soren a little while ago, it had been like an electric current had passed between us. I rubbed at the spot absently now as I talked with the royal Holland family and their friends from planet Macros.

“What do you think of Raider’s environment?” Wisteria was asking, and I forced my thoughts from Kain to focus on the conversation.

“I love it so far. The colors are astounding.”

“Even more than Hollander?” She lifted her delicate auburn eyebrows, her freckled nose scrunching up. Wisteria was stunning, unlike anyone I’d ever seen before with her pale green skin and red hair streaked with green.

“Well, from what I’ve seen so far, Hollander is lovely,” I replied. “Kain says that it’s the crown jewel of your solar system.”

“Apparently Macros is just as beautiful in its own way,” Brittany chimed in, looking up from where she was cooing to little Carlin. “Rahl and Wisteria have been trying to get Niall and I to come for a visit for some time now, but we haven’t had a chance.”

“Perhaps you and Kain can come as well,” Wisteria suggested, her smile warm and friendly.

It had been a while since I’d spent much time with other women. I had a few friends back on Earth, but none that I was really close with. Something about these women made me feel at ease and comfortable, though. Like we could easily be friends.

Brittany snorted. “Good luck getting Kain to do anything that isn’t somehow related to his leadership.”

I turned to Brittany, my curiosity piqued. “How well do you know Kain?”

“He served as my bodyguard for a while last year, so I’d say I got to know him pretty well. Have you met his friend Dordus?”

I laughed at the face she made, like Dordus was quite the handful. “I have. He seems like a good guy.”

“Oh, he is. If you can get past the belching and fart jokes.” Brittany’s smile told me she was quite fond of Dordus. “He came to our wedding and brought a gift from his daughter.”

“Gulray. She’s absolutely lovely. She gave us a fertility sculpture for our wedding.”

Brittany’s smile widened and she glanced over at baby Carlin, who was lying in a cradle just a few feet away. “She did for us as well. Kain’s a good guy,” she added, her gaze lifting back to mine as she studied me closely. “He saved my life before he even knew who I was. Then again a few weeks later. If there’s one thing you can be certain of when it comes to Kain, he’s always going to do the right thing, even if he comes off a bit gruff at times.
