Randolph exhaled and leaned back after listening to Henry’s tale. The whole crew was back in Gary’s room at the resort. Everything had gotten so much more convoluted than he ever imagined it could. If only he had known what this trip to Fiji would have become, he wondered if he would have done something differently. Like not go at all.

That was before.

Now was after.

Too late for thoughts like that now. Nothing productive ever came from what-ifs. It was time to refocus and handle what needed to be handled. What that meant, though, how he fit into this scheme, was still unclear.

“So, from what you’re telling us,” Gary began, “Pablo is a street thug. Yet, on the other hand, we’re being told he’s a third-, maybe second-level Crip with direct communication with the boss. King Crip, they call him. Something’s not making sense here.”

“I lost contact with Pablo,” Henry said. “Not an accident, by the way. Like I said, he’s a bad dude. I want nothing to do with him. I last saw him a couple of years ago now. I haven’t talked to or heard from him since. Haven’t heard anything about him, frankly. He must have worked his way up in the organization.”

“How?” Gary asked.

“Don’t know the inner workings, couldn’t tell you. I’d guess he did some dirty work that other members either couldn’t or wouldn’t do. Which makes sense. He’s off, guys, I’m telling you. He’s scary.”

Randolph was exhausted. Mentally, physically, and now emotionally. This was all too much for him. He felt restless. He missed home and his tedious, predictable, steady life. Now he understood what people meant when they said to be careful what you wished for. What began as the itch to get out and spice up his life a bit, to inject some excitement and adventure into it, turned into this chaos. It was amazing how quickly one small, seemingly inconsequential decision could snowball into something as extraordinary as this. If only he had not walked into the supermarket that day; if only he had not grabbed that hand of bananas; if only he had not struck up a conversation with Sheila; if only he had taken that pen like he was supposed to.

Sheila.

Nothing would ever be the same again.

“I think I should call Pablo,” Henry said.

This captured Randolph’s attention. He was brought back.

“Excuse me?” Gary said. “If this guy’s the badass you’re saying he is, why would you do that?”

“He is a badass, but he’s never done anything to me. We were almost friends once. I could get him to talk to me.”

“But why?”

“Find out what’s going on. Maybe we can work something out.”

“I think it’s a good idea, actually,” Benji said. “This island isn’t that big. It won’t take long for them to find us. We can’t hide in here forever. There’s no harm in calling. What’s the worst that could happen?”
