A mate baits the lines on his boat in hopes of catching a white marlin. He has decided to use mackerel, ballyhoo, and mullet while trolling.

Another method is trolling. With this approach, the captain motors the boat at slower speeds with several lines in the water to see if anything bites. With trolling, anglers generally keep their rods in the gunwales, or pockets on the side of the boat, or on outriggers that keep the line perpendicular to the ocean surface.

Sometimes captains use sonar to locate an underwater structure such as a reef or wreckage. These structures are magnets for fish because they contain all kinds of plants and smaller fish for the larger fish to feed on. When a captain locates a concentration of fish, he or she may turn off the power, anchor the boat, and drop the lines straight to the ocean floor. This method is called bottom fishing.

Drifting is similar to bottom fishing, except that the boat’s anchor is not dropped. The boat drifts with the tide and current. You can fish straight to the bottom or at mid-level depths when drifting, depending on the type of fish you wish to catch.

Luring the Fish

The best offshore anglers have definite opinions about what works for them when it comes to attracting fish, based partly on experience and luck and a little bit of superstition. The best thing to do is to get advice from a captain or crewmember or anyone who has experience fishing the specific waters you’re in.
