Disenfranchising Rentiers

The single most important and urgent matter and the only action that can genuinely solve Brazil’s development problem is disenfranchising rentiers. This battle will be the toughest one as rent capillarity in local, regional, state, and national politics in Brazil is all-pervading. The bond between government and rent dates back from the very formation of the State:This association is materialized in a Hobbesian scheme in which wars stimulate the creation of taxes, which finance them. Currencies appear as a way of delimiting the territorial horizon of tax collection, and, finally, the circulation of a unit of value standardization ends up engendering exchange and trade. Therefore, the precedence of power over wealth is one of the theoretical principles for interpreting capitalism. Thus, the knot that binds the owners of power to the owners of money seems to reveal itself with particular clarity, precisely in the sphere of high finance. In other words, in that dimension in which state and capital rights are confused in the process of monetary management, precisely because the currency fulfils both public functions and companies.
