Liam and Declan are in the bank vault, filling four large trolleys with notes and covering the money with cardboard and rubbish. The intercom buzzes and Liam answers it.

‘Liam?’ Joe Bittles says.

‘Yes, Joe?’

‘That council lorry is outside.’

‘Thanks, Joe. We’re just loading up. We’ll be up in a minute. By the way, how do you feel now?’

‘Lousy. Gotta run.’

Declan walks around his two grilled trolleys, occasionally poking his fingers through the metal squares to ensure that cardboard, rather than blocks of money, is all that is visible to the naked eye. ‘Finished,’ he says.

Liam examines his trolleys, on top of which are old broken chairs. Both men push the trolleys out of the vault and into the large lift that will bring them to the control-room floor, which houses the interlocking security doors, the security room and the outside bullion bay. Liam closes the lift door. As the lift ascends, Declan pivots on the balls of his feet, his eyes searching the ceiling. Opening and closing his mouth, he makes popping noises.

‘Will you please stop doing that?’ Liam says tetchily. ‘You’re getting on my nerves.’

‘Sorry.’

The lift stops and the two shove the trolleys to the first security door and wait. The buzzer sounds, and they proceed into the sterile area, between the two security doors. Cecil Wilkinson hits the button that opens the second security door. Liam and Declan push the trolleys, one after another, into the outside bullion bay. Only a set of steel doors separates them from the street.
