I’m proud to be a Leprechaun.

This made Avery smile.

Being human-size in a village built for Leprechauns had its disadvantages. Avery was much too big to get into the shop. So, she lay down on her stomach on top of the round, multicolored cobblestones and turned her head so that she could peek in the leaded-glass windows. From this position, she could see the shoemaker working at his bench. He had a boot upside down on a wooden support stand and was nailing on a heel with a tiny hammer. She could hear the muffled sounds of the hammer as it tapped away at the nails, keeping time with the song he was humming.

She tapped on the door with her index finger. The shoemaker turned and, upon seeing her large face in the window, jumped off his stool, dropping the hammer and nails which scattered all over the floor. He gained his composure once he realized who the large human was that had tapped on his door and he hustled over to open it.

“Why, Avery, you gave me quite a start! Quite a start, indeed,” he said with a smile and a tip of his hat.

“I’m so sorry. I didn’t mean to frighten you.”

“Oh my dear, do not worry. It is just not every day that I have someone such as yourself knocking at my door. So do tell me, to what I owe the honor of this visit?” he said with a cock of his head and a wink of his eye.

“I am hoping that you can help me.”

“Well, of course I will try. What is it?” responded the shoemaker, kindly.

She reached around to her pocket and pulled out a sheet of paper. On the paper, she and her siblings had drawn a shoe in the style of the running shoes of her day. She handed it to the shoemaker. I need two hundred and fifty-nine shoes that look just like this.”

With Avery’s help, the shoemaker spread the large sheet of paper out on the street in front of his shop. He stepped onto it. Adjusting his glasses on his nose, he walked around and around the shoe, examining the drawing from every angle. “Hmmm, very interesting...Hmmm, never seen anything like it…Hmmm.” He removed his hat and scratched his head before looking up at Avery. “Where did you get such an odd looking shoe?”

“These are the kind of shoes they wear in the human world.”

“They don’t look very sturdy.”

“No, I suppose not in comparison to the boots that you Leprechauns usually wear, but this type of shoe is designed for quickness. They are very light and enable the wearer to run fast.”

“Ah…I see,” said the shoemaker as he went back to scratching his head and walking around the drawing.

“I need them for the Legion. They need to be able to run faster and climb more easily if we are to outmaneuver the trolls,” added Avery.

“Yes, I can see how that would be quite helpful. When do you need these shoes?”

“As soon as you can get them done.
